"African jade" is mined in the reaches of Africa, and for this reason gets its name. It is not a real jade, but actually an opaque grossular garnet that resembles jade. Grossular garnet is a silicate of calcium and aluminum.
Garnet has been used for thousands of years to strengthen one's physical and psychic vitality, aiding in shielding the aura of the wearer against ill or ill-will. A lovely semi-precious stone of constancy, honor and courage, it has been used as a talisman by everyone from warriors to wise women. Although we are most familiar with the deep red garnets, the greens bring a similar base energy, while adding the energies of the heart chakra.
Manifesting in the greens of the Heart chakra, these "African jade" or grossular garnets bring the gift of ease both within one's own heart as well as in greeting the hearts of others. The chakra colors of pink or green show the fertility of Spirit and emotional Being in which we all both give and receive - in love as well as friendship.
One very important lesson of the Heart chakra, which is the bridge between the physical body and our Spirit Self, is learning to treat ourselves with the same love with which we treat others. Too often we think that our loved ones deserve the very best and that we really don't matter in the long run. Somehow, it's much easier than believing that we owe ourselves the same treatment and sense of respect. However, once this negative self-image begins to fray, we begin to realize that unless we treat ourselves with love, we really cannot receive it!
As a Birthstone for Libras, Opals are intensely connected with relationships. The polarity sign, Aries, indicates that one IS, and Libra joins with Aries and extends the statement to become we are. We incarnate to learn how to integrate the sign opposite our Sun sign (as well many other reasons, of course), so it is healthy for Libras to read up on how to Be as an individual, as well as about relationships, so as not to fall into co-dependent ones. In the same vein, it is important for Aries to read about and practice cooperation, sharing, and the finesse needed for healthy compromise as well as learning how to balance the needs of one's self in this world of others.
In evolving and trying to learn the lessons of the other sign, one shouldn't go too far and abandon taking care of one's own needs or respecting the concept of Selfhood. As one school of philosophy would assert, self is essential to other, but it is healthy to remember that a partnership is at its strongest when two Whole people come together. Others are mirrors from which we learn about what Self is, but that doesn't mean we should discount our own self-perceptions.
Peruvian (Andean) Opal is mystically known as a stone of courage, creativity, and ingenuity. It is said to improve self-esteem and self-love. It is also said to be an aid to creativity and communication of all types. It is reputed to help one find a confidante as well. Its color links it with the throat chakra, aiding in communication between friends or lovers.
Opal is said to bring inspiration and imagination. Opal augments memory, is a very spiritual stone, and can help bring happy dreams. For those of us who resist change, it can ease the trauma of metamorphosis.
The opal is also linked with invisibility, but we somehow doubt you'll find yourself invisible while wearing these! The opal is also used to bring out your inner beauty, and is a luck-bringing stone.
