Another in our series of flower earrings, these are made of large brecciated jasper lily beads. For the stamen we used a small, deep red faceted coral bead, and for the stems, lovely green malachite tubes. Faceted rondelles finish the earrings which dangle about 2 1/2 inches below the sterling clamshell earwires which can be used to hang your favorite charms as well, since they are interchangeable.

Jaspers are one form of chalcedony - a large family of microcrystalline quartz. Chalcedonies include such stones as bloodstone, carnelian, etc. Jaspers often contain differing sedimentary minerals, including shards or pigmentation from other individual chalcedonies. They are a very fascinating arm of the quartz crystal family!

Magickal lore tells us that Jaspers have "cooling" energy. The are said to encourage healing and longevity, assist with sleep problems, and their extensive use in the ancient world as amulets denotes the protective vibe that jaspers bring. This stone, which grows in many colors and types, has been indicated as increasing health and feelings of well-being, lessening fear under stress, and promoting the courage to manifest your dreams! Jasper helps you to stay anchored even while doing meditative or Astral work, and nurtures you even while helping you to learn new ways to nurture others. It is a wonderful stone family which is very helpful to work with and wear.

Brecciated jasper is one of the more stunning jaspers. When angular minerals appear in a stone, they are called breccia. Although poppy jasper is a type of brecciated jasper, the minerals appear more in swirling bands than angular deposits. This type of jasper has been said to not only be protective, but grounding as well, in that the colors are associated with the Root chakra - the base of the spine which covers survival issues and matters connected with the earth plane. Because there are tan colors in this piece, there is also a connection to the Navel chakra, through which we manifest our passions and sensuality!

The red jaspers are especially potent... connected with the Root chakra at the base of the spine - the chakra which has to do with survival, security, including reproduction - for that is survival of the species. This chakra is red and black... two colors, like the heart and Brow chakra. Black is both death and the soil of Mother Earth, into whom we dig our roots to be grounded in the material world, the bed from which seeded plants awaken. The red energizes, increases courage... and the two together strengthen the aura and bring psychic protection as well, during waking times as well as during astral travel. In addition, some sources indicate that this stone heightens one's abilities to communicate with animals!

Coral is the beautiful, multi-colored skeleton of sea creatures of varying family types. Coral used in jewelry is not bio-threatened, as all having to do with the Great Barrier Reef and endangered coral areas are subject to international law, and the coral used for jewelry is not from the living colonies in which it grows, but from the cast-off skeletons. White coral is easily found just by walking along the beach after low tide, in many forms - branched, sponge, etc. We have some lovely large skeletonized coral which is quite beautiful.

Coral comes in a variety of colors, but the red is the most dramatic. From ancient times to the present, people have often given tiny bracelets of coral on red string to new mothers, to tie around the wrists of their infants. In some areas, this has changed to giving a braided red bracelet to the infant. The reasoning derives from ancient lore that coral is an intensely powerful deflector of negative thought forms, including envy towards the mother for having had the child. Often a bracelet is worn by the mother, or clothing as well, which has eyes or round mirrors sewn in - for the same occult* reasons.

And should anyone doubt the efficacy of coral in repelling harmful thoughts and astral entities, for it is still used for such in modern magicks, take note of the fact that the rosaries of Buddhist monks are often made of coral - because of their belief that coral repels dark entities and thought forms!

The lovely swirls of malachite made the stone a delight to women in ancient Egypt. In fact, as malachite forms from copper, we find that the stone itself is ruled by Venus, symbol of woman. Venus brings beauty, draws to it wealth, enhances creativity. In addition, malachite has been used throughout the world as a protection from any ill-will.

Manifesting in Heart chakra green, malachite brings the gift of ease, within one's own heart as well as when greeting the hearts of others. This chakra color draws evolutionary energies to one's Spiritual and emotional Self - to assist our abilities to both give and receive - in love as well as friendship.

One very important lesson of the Heart chakra, which is the bridge between the physical body and our Spirit Self, is learning to treat ourselves with the same love with which we treat others. Too often we think that our loved one/s deserve the very best... and that we really don't matter, in the long run. Somehow, it's much easier than believing that we owe ourselves the same treatment and sense of respect. However, once this negative self-image begins to fray, we begin to realize that unless we treat ourselves with self respect, we really are not open to receiving it!

As a stone which purifies and releases energy, malachite bridges chakras from the Solar Plexus up into the throat. The stone is wonderful with releasing emotions, and renewing one's lifeforce, encouraging clear communication and purification, on the physical as well as spiritual levels!
